Transition Milwaukee

Rebuilding Community Resilience & Self-Reliance

There were quite a few dropped jaws by the conclusion of StoneLeigh's Cautionary Presentation of Current SocioEconomic Trends and how they'll forecast... She scared a bunch of us.

Fortunately she also confirmed to many, that we are on the right track with our Transition Movement, Victory Garden Initiative and Time Exchange. Hopefully she energized more of us to participate in growing and linking our efforts to form a more balanced community to meet the impending challenges.

Her extremely thorough culling of data to project such a dramatically sudden collapse of credit, finance then infrastructure is hard to deny... but are there any in the group who went home to challenge her statements?
What say?—

Diluting "IT" makes sense, only if "her assessment" is what we are pursuing. I am trying to sharpen my assessment.

I would encourage critics of the need and desire for a certain kind of questioning and analysis to make a distinction between: I don't feel the need to engage in that/I think you ought not engage in it. There are good reasons for pursuing many paths and responses and we don't need or want a community where everyone responds with a uniform ratio of action to reflection, no?
In the short time that I have been involved with TM I have several times been given the distinct impression that some members believe that you can either ACT or deliberate. I would suggest that thoughtful consideration and action are not diametrically opposed. I recognize that there can be a danger of analysis paralysis, however, it seems important, to me at least, to reflect and question along the way to whatever action is proposed. And if reflection is not a skill one is interested in developing, then at least remain open to the thoughts of those who find it useful.
Sorry maybe I am guilty of this presentation. I do think that we can do both, But I personally don't want to WAIT to act until after we agree as all the details and exact whys. This culture has done so many studies and talks that lead to nothing or not near enough that I am impatient and desperate to see more action that will lead to the safety of our children. I think it can safely be said that when dealing with such big issues, as we are, there will be passion and disagreement. We can all just keep going on. I would think that my impatience might come from just wanting to see us getting more people out working and spreading the word to others on the work that needs to be done. I am not sure how to temper my feelings, Transitions is where I feel safe to let my passion to save the world out. to feel like maybe through action we can. I guess I joined transition because it is such an action oriented group and i love that idea. I read the handbook and accept the basic premise that we need to work together as a community to transition to a new world. You all can talk all you want about Nicoles predictions! I'll step back now. BUT....! we have 7 more days to sell hazel nuts that will arrive Nov 6th , can I get any more orders from anyone? :)
This link below was sent to me from the person that organized the Foss tour. I requested more detailed information on the basis of Nicole Foss's beliefs.

I'll have more closed videos of Nicole to share at a later date for those wanting to get together and discuss this. These videos are not for public display so can't be put up on the web

Inside, we all have the capacity for fear. As children, we were comforted by our parents. Likewise, we seek comfort by seeking comfort from those we feel know better than us. Whether it is StoneLeigh or Chris Martenson, we are glued to their every word seeking a clue to what we need to do to escape what we fear. I know that is what I have done. I have listened to every Internet speech StoneLeigh I could find on the Internet. I could not get to see her in person, because I was in Florida on vacation. I also couldn't make it when she returned to Milwaukee. Instead I paid $12.50 to her online presentation which includes her slides. I also purchased Chris Martenson's 3 disc DVD package hoping to get all my answers. Both of them provided really good information but very little in regard to answers. Then after reading all of these comments here it solidified my conclusions that we simply do not have answers now. We have broad answers such as being as personally debt free as possible but there are so many questions left unanswered.

For example:

Should we have a lot of money available but not in a bank?
Do we need a way to protect ourselves? A gun, a baseball bat, etc?
What does someone do if they are retired?
What does one do if they are disabled?
Are we looking at this coming in a year? 5 years? 10 years?
Should we come up with ways to provide ourselves power? Is that necessary?
How do we prepare kids? Do we tell them about these frightening issues? At what age?
Should the schools be preparing? Do we inform the schools?

I personally agree with Joanna Macy. I think she has nailed it. But I believe we need a dialog between us to see if we can arrive at some kind of consensus on what we believe is the best current thinking to provide us answers based on logic and common sense.

On October 29, 2010 Transition Wisconsin achieved it's goal of Tax Exempt status from the I.R.S. We are now an organization (charity) which can receive and provide funds for the purpose of education of the Transition movement. Our first steps are to visit Transition Initiatives around the State and ask them what they need to help their cause. Maybe finding common ground on what people feel are reasonable directions and sharing this with the public might be good use of those funds. The Initiatives are the best to decide. Transition Wisconsin is merely there to help facilitate.

So, is this a good place to start this dialog? Or should it be at a meeting? I have truly enjoyed reading this thread and hope we can interact in some meaningful way going forward.

I believed, before I heard of Nicole Foss and I'm not waiting for consensus or anyone to take action. Ultimately we are only responsible for what we do and think. Nicole's arguments made great sense to me and "The Crash Course" augmented those with additional information/argument. I'm interested in hearing what people think and are doing but the Bay View EcoVillage is moving and finding "duel purpose actions" which are good ideas whatever happens. That's not all we are doing but those actions are the easiset to implement and we will be organizing a discussion on "taking action" and not endlessly looking for the "holes" in the argument. I think we're not all that surprised that the "wheels will fall off" but rather that it might occur sooner rather than later.

My sense is that there will be much hopelessness we will have to combat when it gets ugly. Some will not want to live in a world that is strange and unknown to them. I believe it is crucial to create a vision of what we wish our world looked like because we may have an opportunity to move solidly towards that vision in a time of crisis and chaos. This could be one of those worst case scenario's that turned out to be the "best case scenario." Unfortunately though this will be a dark and scary time and we can play a central role in shining our way to a better reality.

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but next Sunday December 19 th Nicole Foss will be a guest on Michael Ruppert's Lifeboat show on the Progressive Radio Network. The show will be live and also archived. Just google search the PRN site and check for time or access the archives. Michael Ruppert is the author of the very long book, Crossing the Rubicon: The American Empire at the End of the Age of Oil. The book weaves it all together and shows the reader how everything in American foreign policy since 1918 is saturated in drugs and oil.

Quite an eye opener but careful because it is so depressing it can shatter the belief system you learned since birth from our government.     Bryce Ruddock
