Transition Milwaukee

Rebuilding Community Resilience & Self-Reliance

At the 6/22/09 meeting we discussed the possibility of becoming an "official" Transition Initiative, perhaps the first in the state. One of the requirements is for at least two members of the "core team" to attend Training for Transition (T4T). I've spoken recently with our region's T4T Trainer, Bill Wilson, and he's happy to come to the region to do a training as soon as there is sufficient interest.

T4T is a 2-day (typically 9am to 5pm) training experience. Read a more detailed description here. The cost to participate is usually around $200-$250 per person, which includes lunch on both days. The final cost depends on the number of registrants and whether the group is able to do some fundraising to reduce costs.

If we bring a training session to Southern Wisconsin (Milwaukee-Jefferson-Madison area), would you likely participate?
Please post responses here so we can get a feel for whether we have enough interest to schedule a training session.

I have been speaking with one of the trainers for our region, Becky Wilson, and the earliest potential date for the training would be October 10-11, 2009.
Id like to participate, but since Im a farmer, Id be most likely to attend in the off-season :)
Yeah, I know... I hate to wait this long, but after October, they're pretty much booked until January.
Actually, January and early February would be best for me, since that's my slow time of year in my business. But don't hold up the show for me, if others are ready to do it now.
It might be better to wait until later. I'm guessing they'll continue to tweak the training to address some of the issues that large Midwest cities are dealing with that weren't part of the UK experience. We're a big city, sitting on the largest freshwater basin in the world. Those two things are probably working their ways into Transition training (or should be).

For a city/group our size, I'd rather see 4-5 or even more people do the training. Everyone involved seems so busy, so it seems more realistic that we find several people to take small pieces than 2 to take large chunks. It would also be awesome if those people represented different demographics: old and young, different neighborhoods, different focuses and skills, etc.

And then, we need to make sure that we have people who will stick with us if they are taking the training. Some people expressed interest at the meeting, right? Do we know who? It's a big commitment. And one that we have to be confident that people will stick to 6 months after they sign up for it and 6 months - a year after they do it.
All very good points. Waiting also gives us all (and by this I mean Transition Milwaukee, and the Jefferson & Dane County groups, too) time to fundraise. Becky referred me to a page with more details about the cost. Basically it is a flat fee, so the more people attend, and the more each group can raise to offset costs, the less it will cost for each person to attend. And it's even conceivable that there could be funding to pay a training coordinator for their time.

Of course this gets back to the financial/legal status questions. Form a non-profit? Try to partner with UEC? Bucketworks? Anther local non-profit? (And if you do go to the trouble of forming a non-profit, perhaps the local currency project can fall under the same organization.)
Count me in for the training.

Great, Swee. How does January work for you?
Hi gang,
Aside from what's been said so far about training, I'm recalling the list of requirements for becoming official, of which training was but one. I wonder if we can have an online page on this site with blanks beside each requirement for either noting the "final answer" (or whatever the case may be) or listing the 1-3 people that are heading the cause on that particular point.
Great ideas, Mark. I created a page listing the criteria, under the Projects tab. (If you can think of a better place to put this, let me know. Also, if anyone knows how to make this a checklist rather than a bulleted list, let me know.) I must leave it to the rest of you to find people to work on these items.
Best wishes,
Nicole
I'd be interested and able, since Oct 10-11 is on a weekend, but I am new to the group and not on the "core team". I can help with fundraising activities.

I found this an interesting intro re: permaculture on the link you provided.

Yes I would like to attend the Transition Training. I know Bill Wilson through his work at Midwest Permaculture and know that he is a great presenter for this topic.
Bryce Ruddock, Permaculture Designer and well acquainted with the topic.
