Vision
Transition Milwaukee Westside is a group formed out of Transition Milwaukee and the
Transition Towne Movement. We encompass all areas west of the central city. We
work with and help our neighbors and businesses to create a more resilient and
sustainable region based on permaculture principles through outreach, advocacy, and
modeling.

Mission
We will facilitate change through communal working together on projects to create
models to be replicated throughout our community.
We will take action to create a resilient, vibrant community.

Transitions Westside 2/2012 – minutes


Attended by – Barbara Brown, Greg Banks, Barbara Richards, Don Timmerman, Karen Walther, Suzanne Moynihan, Roberta Thurstin-Timmerman, Beth Gehred, Neal Styka, Alicia Crowe, Carol Waskovich, Carol Caffrey


Introductions and heartsong


Visitors from out of town – Beth Gehred Town and Country Resource Conservation and Development, Inc. (Jefferson, WI) – Is a great resource for community resources and knowledge of what is happening in the 13 Counties in South/South East Wisconsin

Barbara Brown (Transitions Houston) – Said that from her perspective we are past peak oil, Transition Houston has worked to network like minded organizations,


Tour and History of Urban Ecology Centers – Erick – Community Liaison – showed us the whole place, very excited to have us here


Action Plan – goals, objectives, policies with specific milestones/dates.

Visioning – We worked on creating a vision from what people brought back – Barbara Richards will rework it just a little and send it out, Neal will work with Google Docs (will be done at next meeting)

Power Down Week – for next meeting bring ideas of what you would like to see for powerdown week – specific projects/event ideas

PD Week will be before or after 4th July, we don’t want to complete with events already happening in other parts of town.

Tabling for Earth Day –Mt. Mary, Elm Grove, Washington Park – Greg, Carol W. and Barbara Richards – have fliers for what skills you can share along with signup sheets

Permaculture ethics/principles - At future meetings we will discuss these for 5 minutes each meeting

Google Docs – Barbara Brown will bring laptop next meeting to help facilitate us getting used to and signed up for it

Reskilling – Alicia passed out cards – things we can teach/things we want to learn

She will review the cards and list who was interested in what and what people can teach – email out and bring a copy

Elder Support (Permaculture Elder Care)

Raised Bed Gardens – high off the ground for people with mobility issues

Instead of nursing homes/institutions stay in homes/communities

Taking care of one another

Reverence for our Elders

Perhaps we need to re-learn from traditional cultures/older generations

Transitions Elder Council – probably should be a Transition Milwaukee wide group – form its own working group – Greg Banks, Carol W., Barbara Brown

Peggy, Carol, Carol W. Erika, Suzanne, Barb and Greg

Shared how we got to Westside Transitions group

Barb shared how the mining public meeting went at State Fair Park today. Lisbon Food Village update. Things are in a real estate procurement mode.

Suzanne reported Mount Mary college is starting a sustainability committee, also handed out flyers for coming events (including upcoming climate change talk at Wauwatosa library).

Peggy shared some Riverkeepers information.

Erika also shared some Riverkeepers information and that Transitions spoke to their group and that’s how they ended up here.

Carol got here through an interest in ecology from her father.

Greg got here through the Green Party and is focused on the recall right now

Carol Washovitch got here through working for a church as an educator on environmental issues. Interfaith of Milwaukee will have a conference in October to educate clergy and others on environmental awareness. She also reported on the EPA powerplant meeting from yesterday.
