Riverwest, Milwaukee, WI--Growing up, I remember my mother and many of our neighbors using large crocks to make pickles, sauerkraut, and a variety of other fermented foods.

Crocks were easy to fill and their wide mouths made it easy to weigh down the food to keep it from floating above the brine. All kinds of vegetables were fermented in those crocks. My father and his friends harvested their hops and fermented another popular Milwaukee beverage, beer. These fermented delicacies were customary at the dinner table throughout the winter and into the spring months until the garden started to bear.Read more


Milwaukee Transitioners Celebrate Grand Finale of Summer Events
