The Draw Permaculture Design Course (Bayfield, WI) at Bayfield, WI - The Draw Permaculture Sanctuary

July 13, 2012 at 6pm to July 23, 2012 at 7pm
Permaculture Design Course             We hope you will leave the course saturated with a new way of knowing that will empower you to look at old problems with new lenses and then find holistic solutions that completely solve problems rather than creating new ones.  In this ten day workshop we will delve deeply into the system of permaculture design.  We will begin by exploring a new way of knowing that is holistic and biological.  One way to describe permaculture is land use design based in…See More

Hi everyone,I'm sending this out for a friend of mine, Shelly, who is putting on two natural building workshops with a friend of hers. The two workshops will be set over three days. Strawberry picking carpool to JenEhr farms on Thursday June 17th 9AM at JenEhr Farm Sun Prairie, WI

June 17, 2010 from 7:30am to 3pm
Hi everyone,I just wanted to invite along along four other people to go strawberry picking at JenEhr farm on Thursday. More than four are welcome, but there's only room for four in the car. They are one of the few certified organic pick you own farms in Wisconsin, located in Sun Prairie, about 16 miles East of Madison. The strawberries are $2.75 per pound U-Pick and $5 a quart pre-picked ($36 for a 10 pound flat (8 quarts)). I plan to leave Milwaukee around 7:30am in order to arrive by 9am. I…See More

"That's great that you found a contact in Chicago. How much of a micro loan needs to be raised? Not sure of the logistics in transporting the trailer/materials either, so you might want to also consider Dream-bikes.org to see if they can help…"

Micro loan needed for buying or building a bike trailer

Recently there has been some talk about starting a compost collection system in Milwaukee as part of the Victory Garden Initiative and therefor under the banner of transitioning. Part (half?) of the money collected for the pick up fee would be for the VGI and the other half for those who pick up and deliver the compost. I would be thrilled to see this started and essentially start collecting myself. I don't own a car, but own a sturdy touring bike and see no problem in bike collection. The idea…See More

Visit Wellspring at Wellspring Farm

April 10, 2010 from 12pm to 2pm
The main idea behind this visit is to see some examples of permaculture in action. Although a traditional organic vegetable CSA with 4 1/2 acres of vegetables, Wellspring also has some newly integrated permaculture design that would be helpful for those involved with Concordia Gardens or even expanding what you can do at home. This is a pretty low key event. I had in mind touring the farm itself and the newly planted (last year) site at Riveredge Nature Center. This is mainly for bringing back…See More

Earth Hour 2010 at Earth

March 27, 2010 all day
On Earth Hour hundreds of millions of people, organizations, corporations and governments around the world will come together to make a bold statement about their concern for climate change by doing something quite simple—turning off their lights for one hour. In the U.S. where we are already feeling the impacts of climate change, Earth Hour sends a clear message that Americans care about this issue and want to turn the lights out on dirty air, dangerous dependency on foreign oil and costly…See More

Concordia Gardens work day at Corner of Concordia and Palmer - Across the street from the red brick church

March 28, 2010 from 10am to 2pm
Concordia Gardens on the corner of Concordia and Palmer is looking for more volunteers to spread the mulch! The 1.5 acre space is newly leased this year, and because of that, there is prep work and site planning to do before anything can be planted. We could use volunteers and their energy to form raised beds, dig a swale or two, spread some leaf mulch, and have a good time. There is a lot of possibility in this large space for creativity, community organization, and good food. If you can't…See More

The UAC has 2 presentations: 1) The History of the Friday Fish Fry and the Disappearing Fish and 2) An Overview of the Disappearing Fish Problems of the Great Lakes and Urban Closed Loop Aquaculture/Aquaponics Ecosystems as a solution to being able to reintroduce native Great Lake species like Perch and Walleye to the fish fry menu aplenty once again. I would like to suggest a movie night with Ron Faiola's film Fish Fry Night Milwaukee 414-202-6322

Adrian, I've just realized that those events I mentioned are not on the same night, but in fact on separate Thursdays. This Thursday is the UWM concert; next Thursday is the Intentional Community discussion. Sheesh, there's a lot to keep track of! Glad to hear you're planning on attending! You better warm up your legs for the cycling on Thursday! :)
Yes, I work at an architectural firm in their marketing department. It's a great company and offers a nice variety of projects to work on. We have quite a few LEED projects; it's exciting to see the industry embracing sustainability.

Three weeks, eh? There are certainly a lot of great things to plug into before you leave! This Thursday there are two events: one is a discussion of community living (timely per our discussion!) and the other is a people-powered concert at UWM, using bicycles to run the electricity!

We started up a yahoo group in order to provide an easier way for people to communicate and receive information. Both of these events are posted through this group, which you can join through this link: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TransitionMilwaukee/

I hope you consider attending one (or both - like me) of these events on Thursday. Otherwise, this calendar and our yahoo group will contain other upcoming events. Feel free to post other events or discussion topics to the group, or connect with others on this site. Let me know if you have any questions!

P.S. Ira was great! The conversation was definitely geared towards college students thinking about graduation and embarking on their careers. My favorite bit of advise he revealed: "Don't worry, you'll suck. And you'll suck for a long time. Not just a few years, but 7,8, even 9 years." I had to laugh because I've been at my job for 7 years and still feel like I don't have my footing sometimes. It's important to remember to be forgiving to yourself. :)

Hi Adrian! It was so nice talking to you at the 350 event! How are preparations for your trip going? I hope you write about your experiences with the permaculture project in our forum section. I know a lot of people would be interested in hearing about the planning and implementation, successes and lessons learned. Best of luck in your journey and do keep in touch! ~ Christie
