EROEI discussed in Mechanical Engineering magazine

"Mechanical Engineering", the official magazine of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, in the May issue has a tagline on the cover of "Running on Empty" and and article inside on "Bang for the Buck" and a discussion of EROEI.  They've had articles previously about (essentially) Peak Oil, the need for alternative sources of energy, a transition away from fossil fuels, etc., but this is a different level, I think.  I might try to get  the original article he refers to, as his numbers…See More

Transition Milwaukee Marketing Committee Meeting at Stonefly Brewery

May 6, 2010 from 7:30pm to 9pm
You are invited to attend the TM Marketing Committee Meeting. Why? Because this summer gas prices are projected to go up to over $3 a gallon. Because this is not the last time prices will spike. Because the military has just publicly admitted that our global oil peak will occur by 2012, and our resources will begin to diminish by 2015. Because renewables cannot make up for our current consumption levels. Because our local media is not talking about this. So we have to.If you have skills in the…See More

Profile Information

Why are you interested in the Transition movement?
I'm concerned about a coming reduction in the supply of oil and other energy resources, and am coming to terms with the steps we need to take to prepare for it.
How are you currently involved in the Transition movement?
Nothing directly at this time, but I have a prepared 20-minute talk/lecture on the coming energy changes, trying to give some understanding about what's going to happen.
What skills, talents, and resources do you bring to the Transition movement?
I grew up on a family farm and lived through the major changes, eventually becoming an engineer. I can talk all day about life before "modern" agriculture, when manure was the only fertilizer, crop rotation was the only weed control, when every farmhouse had composting toilets (out-houses), solar clothes dryers (a clothesline), a huge garden, an orchard, and a managed woodlot (for heating, cooking, and construction lumber).
Which topics within Transition most interest you, and what are you most interested in getting out of your involvement in the Transition Movement?
My interest is in the process. How do we change from the cheap energy society we have now in an orderly fashion to a future society where energy is much more expensive and limited?
Organizations you belong to that might collaborate with Transition
None

Hi, Ed! Welcome to Transition Milwaukee. I live in Bay View and am older so do not go out after dark (am a bus rider); BUT would like to know when your next kite launch is scheduled - that will certainly be in daylight hours, yes :)) I will go to your website next. Myy email is darlwill@tds.net or you can reach me at this site. Again, welcome. Hope to meet you soon. My impetus to join TransitionMilwaukee was mostly power things and I would very much like to fashion an off-the-grid light for my side porch as a starter project. I've been researching and have gotten as far as actually understanding the difference between direct current and alternating current. -- Sincererly, Darlene Williams
