Thoreau's Luxuries

Thoreau’s Luxuries: An Interlude-

In times of difficulty, when I need to remember who I am and what I am about, I often turn to books and poetry.  From my bookshelf I feel my patron saints watching over me--or at least I feel the closest thing to that possible for one who subscribes to the natural supernaturalism of the Earth Church.  Sometimes its Wendell Berry or Wallace Stevens; other times its Hegel and Marx; sometimes I’m buoyed by some Adrienne Rich or uncle…

Fantasies of Hyper-Globalism: The WWF's Energy Report

The World Wildlife Fund (WWF) has recently unveiled a new report which ambitiously declares the world can switch to 95% renewable energy sources by 2050. The report is meant to be both inspiring and reassuring in its claim that not only is it “technically feasible to supply everyone on the planet in 2050 with the energy they need with 95 per cent of this energy coming from renewable resources,” but also with its declaration that this is “practically possible” (23). The report further proposes… Continue

Mis-Imagining Peak Oil

I’m going to begin by admitting to a wish that others may also share: I wish for Peak Oil. The sooner, the better. Let’s get it over with; let’s rip off that band-aid.
